Aluminium has long been used for the production of vacuum vessels. Today, it is only chosen when the specific properties of stainless steels prevent them from being used. Aluminium is thus a negative choice. This can be explained by:

- poor knowledge of the comparative properties of these two metal families
- lack of practice or apprehension concerning the use of aluminium
- aluminium's reputation as a difficult metal.
